The only thing better than this animated cover of Acceptance was Jeff VanderMeer’s reaction to it when he visited our offices a couple weeks ago: pure, unadulterated, boyish delight.
(It really seemed to be that poor mouse that gave him the giggles.)
But as far as the internet is concerned, BuzzFeed had the exclusive first look, which they featured today along with Lincoln Michel’s interview with Jeff.
You might ask:
What can fans of Annihilation expect in Authority?
JV: Well, they won’t get more of the same, and I hope they’ll trust me enough to come along with me for the pivot. If Annihilation is an expedition into Area X, then Authority is an expedition into the Southern Reach, the dysfunctional secret agency trying to figure out what’s going on in Area X. Authority has a lot more dark humor in it, including a thousand white rabbits sent on a quixotic mission. You’ll also meet a character known only as The Voice and learn more about what happened to the first expedition. Some characters from Annihilation also turn out to not quite be what they seemed.
For more on literary cross-pollination, binge-reading and binge-watching, and some hints about what the hell’s going on in Area X, keep reading at BuzzFeed. And for animated covers of the first two books, click here.
And, finally, you really should check out interviewer Lincoln Michel’s literary monsters. Roboto Bolaño? Sheila Yeti? Bone Didion: Slay It as It Lays! No, reader, we could not resist.
