‘Tis the season for best of the year lists. We’re pretty pleased to be on more than a few. Below, a roundup of FSG Originals (as well as honorary FSG Originals and alums) that hit some of the year-end best-of lists.
Critics went ape over Catherine Lacey’s “frequently brilliant”* debut novel, Nobody Is Ever Missing this year. It was #1 on Time Out New York’s list of the 10 best books of 2014. #11 of BuzzFeed’s 24 best fiction books of 2014 AND one of 32 of the most beautiful book covers of 2014. Electric Literature named it one of 2014’s best novels AND best debut of 2014. Also in Electric Literature, fellow Originals author Jeff VanderMeer named Nobody Is Ever Missing among his favorite fiction reads of 2014. It was one of The Huffington Post’s best books of 2014, one of Bustle’s best books of 2014, and in the Barnes & Noble Review, Jami Attenberg named it one of the best books she read in 2014 (along with Ugly Girls!) Not too shabby for a debut novel!
Remember when John Darnielle joined us for an Originals event? That makes him an honorary FSG Original. Also, you’d be hard pressed to find a more original debut novel than Wolf in White Van. For these reasons we list his lists below.
Wolf in White Van was among The Boston Globe’s best fiction. It was #23 of BuzzFeed’s 24 best fiction books of 2014 AND one of 32 of the most beautiful book covers of 2014. Eli Horowitz, Matthew Derby, and Kevin Moffett‘s The Silent History was one of the Independent’s best fiction books of the year and the cover, designed by Oliver Munday, was one of The New York Times’ best book covers or 2014.
Don’t Kiss Me, the breakout story collection of FSG Originals alum, Lindsay Hunter, made the Originals look pretty tough way back in 2013. But her debut novel, Ugly Girls, showcased all her raw talent in the longer form. People took notice. It was #1 on BuzzFeed’s 24 best fiction books of 2014. #1! GQ included it on its list of books to give this holiday season. Bustle listed it among the best books of 2014. David Gutowski of Largehearted Boy named Ugly Girls one of his favorite novels of 2014. Jason Diamond of Vol. 1 Brooklyn listed it among the 30 best books of 2014. Electric Literature named Ugly Girls among 2014’s best novels.
