The front page of Tuesday’s New York Times featured lots of breaking news: the Olympics are happening, debates regarding drones continue, and, thanks in part to Jeff VanderMeer’s Southern Reach Trilogy, it’s a great time to be a greedy reader.
Julie Bosman talked to our very own Sean McDonald about his idea for a “rapid fire” publishing schedule for The Southern Reach Trilogy: three books in one year, aimed to spare readers the agony of waiting too long for all of their burning questions to be answered.
“I think the bottom line is that people are impatient,” said Susan Wasson, a longtime bookseller at an independent shop, Bookworks, in Albuquerque. “With the speed that life is going these days, people don’t want to wait longer for a sequel. I know I feel that way. When I like a book, I don’t want to wait a year for the sequel.”
So, here’s the deal: You can pick up a copy of Annihilation today! And then you’ll only have to wait until May for its sequel, Authority! And by the time you’re done with that, the publication of the last installment, Acceptance, will be just around the corner.
Sometimes you actually can get what you want.
